A Valerie Favourite: Chopsticks by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

ChopsticksOnce upon a time, there were two friends who did everything together and who were completely inseparable. They were a pair of chopsticks (literally). This fun and funny book about two chopsticks had me laughing and smiling, at one point even gasping, and ultimately, it had me deciding that Chopsticks by Amy Krouse Rosenthal was definitely one of my new favourite picture books.

Best friends and completely inseparable, the chopsticks have always done everything together. That is, until the day that one of them breaks in a surprise asparagus accident. He is laid up in bed, resting in his chopstick wrapper until the break is better, but his fellow chopstick feels lost without him. What kind of fun can be had when you’re by yourself? As it turns out, the answer is lots of fun.

This is a brightly-coloured picture book that is delightful to look at, fun to read, and fantastic to share. With limited text, even younger children will be able to enjoy this book, but the story will doubtless appeal to older children, as well. Scott Magoon’s illustrations also offer extra fun for the detail-driven reader, as there are great little touches on each page.

This delightful picture book manages to highlight the importance of both friendship and independence, a fine balance; but most important of all, it is great fun to read!
