Hidden Gems: Corduroy by Don Freeman

Corduroy used to be one of my favorite picture books growing up. Corduroy is a young adventurous bear who happens to be very curious. His owner, a young girl named Lisa, is his best friend and she loves bringing him everywhere she goes. In this story she brings him along with her to the laundromat and accidentally loses him. Corduroy gets into a series of adventures and hopes that Lisa will find him.

It’s a very easy story for kids to relate to, because who doesn’t own a cuddly stuffed animal? When I was read the story before bedtime I would always be accompanied by my own stuffed bear, who resembled Corduroy in a way. I shared the same relationship Lisa and Corduroy had; we were best friends and totally inseparable. I spoke to my bear the same way Lisa did. This story’s main message is friendship, love and acceptance and it is shown beautifully through Lisa and Corduroy’s adventure.
