A Katie Favorite: The Lorax

loraxOne of my all time favorite picture books is most definitely The Lorax written by Dr. Seuss. In addition to its fun rhymes and whimsical illustrations, The Lorax has a fundamental message at its core that young readers should all become aware of.

The Lorax is a book that explains to young readers that preserving our environment is of utmost importance. The Lorax explains how the world would be without trees or any other form of nature. The Lorax shows a lackluster, barren land in need of some tender loving care by its inhabitants.

The truffula seed is the key to the story. Planting and preserving this last truffula tree seed is how the whole natural world can be reinvented and saved with just one person’s help at a time.

This story has been used time and time again in lesson plans across a multitude of elementary schools for an Earth Day theme in the month of April but reading it more often than just once a year is very important. I absolutely adored this book, it is both playful, captivating and Dr. Seuss was far in advance of his time by conveying the environmental crisis currently plaguing our planet.
